My family isn’t huge on gadgets – we didn’t even have a pizza cutter or ice cream scoop growing up – so I never completely understood the point of filling up a kitchen with tiny little cheap appliances that say they’ll do more than they actually do. Granted, I do now believe that a pizza wheel is worth having – not totally sold on the scoop. There is one gadget, however, that I do know that I need right now: the bacon bowl. This is ‘As Seen on TV’ genius that combines today’s nationally celebrated salty meat, everything else that you should be eating in lieu of bacon, and the ability to have finger food for any meal of the day. I can’t applaud this dynamite mix of ultimate laziness, novelty, and innovative thinking enough. I say that the only true way to celebrate National Bacon Day is to eat enough of it that it becomes a utensil. Happy holidays!

There’s still time today to fire up the grill and make some beer brats for dinner! We made a designated stop over in the meat department at the grocery store today but once again you’re going to have to celebrate for me. Tonight is Rachel’s rehearsal dinner for her wedding on Saturday so I’ll be too busy with that to grill up myself. Who knows, though, maybe they’re ahead of me on the celebration front and have this on the menu? I guess I’ll find out when I get there! It’s crazy that their wedding is literally 2 days away… And that means mine is just a blink after. I’m so excited for everything but in the meantime let’s be excited about every day in-between with each holiday to come our way – celebrate!

Every year the East Albany Lyons Clubs puts on the all you can eat Lumberjack Breakfast so the family got up this morning to get some grub. There’s honestly nothing better than mass cook-outs. The greasy grills full of bubbling eggs over easy and row upon row of steaming pancakes… YUM! It’s seriously the best breakfast and always a fun addition to Fourth of July festivities for sure!
I’ve never been a vegetarian, like possibly ever. I’ve never gone on weekly trendy kicks or been riled up to make a big change to what I eat because I know that I won’t stick with it – I just eat whatever is on my plate, including those beautiful, juicy sausage links with breakfast. I guess I just feel that while I choose to eat meat I’m not somehow tied into being a true carnivore. My independence from meat gives me the right to choose. Go ahead, have a veggie burger at today’s picnics and barbecues if that’s your prerogative! Happy holidays!

Manly, manly, manly day of men. I’m a girl, that should be fairly clear, but today we celebrate with meat, cheese, and [root]beer; like men. It’s also National Read in the Bathtub Day but that’s just not quite manly enough for us to take interest in. Although, please don’t title me a strict masculinist! I made Eric catch up with Downton Abbey and New Girl with me to even the playing field just a little bit.
The ice and snow is melting and I still haven’t gotten a bus cancellation notification. We’ll see if I make it up back to Portland tonight and if we have school tomorrow. Definitely hoping we don’t because with all of the stuff I missed last week with sickness and weather I could use another day to prepare for everything. Pray for safe travels and flash alerts everybody!
Ahhh we come to a good, American classic. I can seriously dig on a cheeseburger so this is a holiday I can get into! Part of me was dying for the oh-so-specific goodness of a dollar cheeseburger from Micky D’s but a home grilled burger really is better, even with a fake diet bun. And of course there were baked beans and Lays potato chips on the side with a classic root beer to take up the rear. Thank you cows for your service, I appreciate you, and today so does the nation!
Today we celebrate plenty of independence as we not only recognize our nation’s independence from Britain, but also our personal independence from meat! I’ve never been a vegetarian or ever truly wanted to be a vegetarian but I do consider my diet pretty low on meat. I would say that I’m independent from meat because vegetables are just as important to me. I’m not strapped to a piece of steak for dinner, it’s rather a couple bites of heavily seasoned protein to complement my full plate of veggies. Today at the 4th of July barbecue-potluck the pickings were a little slim on the meat-free choices so I filled my plate with exactly what I wanted, meat or not. I guess for me, this Independence From Meat Day is showed more by my ability to eat anything I want than being suppressed and tortured to pick around for what I can eat.
In the words of one of my favorite vegetarians, “Oh puppy, you’re going to love me. I’ve never eaten a bite of animal in my life!”
P.S. You may have noticed that the site now has a different banner and title, don’t worry you’re at the right place! I figured my ‘catchphrase’ was a little more fitting for a title and although we’ve proved that this term is 100% correct I’m sure we can find something to celebrate on the off-days too.
