Happy National Great Bathtub Race Day!

Hello!

Man, today flew right by! I honestly can’t believe that the sun has set and I didn’t get a single moment to just relax! Today we were tasked with the job of prepping for the big move up to Portland, together this time, and that meant that we first had to go through all of our wedding presents and sort out the duplicates for returns while also stuffing everything that we own into boxes. Target’s registry system had been down for weeks before the wedding and guests couldn’t mark what they had purchased so let’s just say a lot of our friends shop in very similar patterns. Three matching aqua oven mitts, three Settler’s of Cataan, two duplicate oversized wall clocks… Lots to return, unfortunately. Eric had to go to work in the middle of the process – I told him that four hours would be far from enough time to get everything squared away – and ten hours later I’m back home and finally getting around to racing some bathtubs. At least the spare room is manageable and we’re all prepped and ready for the move next weekend. One major stress checked off of the list! However, I do not have the energy to participate in the great bathtub race today… We’ll have to just watch this Olivia person that I found on YouTube enjoy the celebration for me. Happy holidays!

Happy National Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day!

happy national particularly preposterous packaging dayHello!

Welcome to our spare room, or what’s left of it. This has always been the exchange student room with a twin bed, small dresser, and just enough space for a suitcase and a hamper to squeeze in too. Currently, though, I would say it’s dressed in some particularly preposterous packaging. Rather than re-wallpaper we’ve just decided to cover the walls with boxes and piles of presents! I, in my ultimate organizer fashion, have managed to stack it in such a way that we can still close the door with no cave ins but heaven knows it’s coming. In fact, part of me wanted to dig out the big yoga ball that I had at my desk in Portland but I know I’m better off just buying a new one because there’s no way that I’m going to find it in the current state. Literally our entire apartment is squeezed in this 6×5 room. Does it look like a room, though? The short answer is no. Luckily I can dedicate it to the holiday! I hope that everyone celebrates along with me and smiles at something, anything, in particularly preposterous packaging!

Happy National Candy Cane Day!

IMG_4831

Hello!

Today we’re wrapping up Christmas and it’s the last party of the season, before New Years, with my dad’s Christmas. We had turkey, ham, and finger food along with the present pile from Grandma and then a big game of White Elephant. As the kids have grown up (Conner and I are tied for the youngest, about 4 years behind the next in line) we’ve been phasing out of presents into more of a game ‘Christmas’. This year I took home the softest blanket I’ve ever felt and a $25 card to Chipotle. Not bad with that restaurant right outside my doorstep. Now when I succumb to the food pressure and wander inside on my way home I don’t have to dig a hole out of my pocket! Dad got a Hickory Farms cheese/sausage box which I might grab a few things out of, Mom landed a lovely tool basket (basically a picnic basket for our uses) full of more food that I shall take with me for my cupboard, Conner got a hairdryer and brush set which he is oddly very excited about, and Eric snagged LED Christmas lights, an apron (mine), and a cake mix. Those prizes were definitely better than the first year when mom was stuck with a box of half-eaten chocolates and $20… Let’s just say that didn’t leave her with a great impression of the game.

It’s also National Thank You Note Day so be sure to whip out your pen and paper to send out your appreciation for the gifts this year. If you’re not so old-school then at least text someone that you love them. It’s not a Merry Christmas without a thank you!

yaelsteinburgP.S. Look at this beauty! As I have been in wedding mode for the last … every day since our engagement (and probably before) I’ve been scouring the internet for jewelry, dresses, shoes, decor, tables, flowers… Literally everything. Well look at this exquisite hair comb! Can’t see it well enough? Go to Yael Steinberg’s Etsy Shop to see one-of-a-kind jewelry that is inspired by nature and different cultures. She has a wonderful story and the things she creates are breathtaking. I’ll be perusing her site, if you need me!

P.S.S. Having a pet can be a lot of work and there are often a lot of questions that you don’t want to go to the veterinarian to answer. Here is a Pet Forum for all pet owners to share stories, answer questions, and post experiences. If you have a pet, you need to come here!

P.S.S.S. Christmas means time with the grandparents and so I’m always learning things about their childhoods, what they’ve lived through, and how it shapes their thoughts. At times it can feel like we’re just too far apart to really connect and then I remember that a) we’re family which transcends everything, and b) all we discuss comes down to core points that we all understand – we just have to get past all the generational colloquialisms and historical ties to deeply understand. Well, there’s a Senior Forum where seniors can discuss things like health, retirement, money, family, and other topics without having to translate between generation gaps!

Happy National Re-Gifting Day!

Hello!

I see nothing wrong with re-gifting; that is, if the gift is good enough to re-give. I think it’s better to give an object use, even through another person, than for it to waste away in a box collecting dust for years and years until a pass at spring cleaning forces it into the Goodwill pile. If you received a good smelling candle for your birthday and you want to give it to me for Christmas – go ahead! I’m actually applauding you for your thriftiness! Let’s appreciate the people this holiday season rather than the presents, or worse where they came from.

Right now Eric and I are re-teaching ourselves Cribbage! I gave it to him as an early Christmas present and it was a darn good idea for the afternoon! It’s not re-gifting but it is a gift!

Happy National Shopping Reminder Day!

periodic table

Hello!

With the pace of the oncoming week I need every reminder that I can get. My overloaded school and music schedule hasn’t hit me too hard so far this term but as of today everything has changed. Finals and projects are looming, juries (the major stress) are approaching at equal speed, and this week in particular is a doozy with the Thanksgiving ballet. I mean, I just remembered this morning that my mother’s birthday is tomorrow! We’ll see if i remember in 24 hours… Shoutout to Mom for a happy birthday right now in case the whirlwind picks me up and carries me away.

So now for the holiday… Black Friday is this Friday and my mom and I are, like all you other dollar savvy Americans, planning our Christmas shopping list and figuring out how to save a buck or two. The biggest problem with Christmas shopping is always deciding what people want. I still haven’t thought of any suggestions for myself except for a bluetooth speaker and a bag to hold my oboe music… Although let’s be realistic – a wedding dress and an oboe make up for about 6 years of Christmases so I’m fine! If you have anyone ‘science’y or geeky in your life I found this awesome website http://periodictableshop.com with those fun, slightly kitschy gifts that people find both hilarious and thoughtful. Perhaps a white elephant present or a gift for the Big Bang Theory enthusiast in your life – apparently there’s a shower curtain that a BBT fan would enjoy?

Happy National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day!

IMG_3833

Hello!

Today’s the day to get sneaky!! Get out in your gardens, or the grocery store if you don’t have a mom with a green thumb, and give your neighbors a vegetable gift to add to their dinner! Our garden this year has completely exploded… The tomato bush is literally five feet tall and we had to put the sprinkler onto a pole so it would be able to spray over the top! I’m not kidding when I say that we have plenty of zucchini to spare. Roxie, if you’re reading this the ‘neighbor with a garden’ is me!

IMG_3830The other thing we might choose to celebrate today is World Cat Day – my cat loving friend Lindsey informed me about today. I have to admit I was way more invested in Zucchini Day so I hadn’t exactly planned to adopt a cat or anything. I hope everyone feels free to hug a cat and look at adorable cat videos but I’m a little busy playing with my dog (the better domesticated animal). And if you need to look at some kitty pictures Lindsey has an album with over 200 photos to share so hit her up!
